Kitchen remodel: Cabinets

Hey there!

This post has been a long time coming. *Note: this post is picture heavy! I wanted to post earlier but it took a while to get the trim and end pieces on the cabinets. We decided to do the cabinets in stages. Our kitchen only had cabinets on 2 walls and we were putting new cabinets on 4 walls so we started with the walls that were bare. Since we had already painted the ceiling and walls that wasn't something we needed to worry about.

This wall is where we decided to put a coffee bar. Up to this point we had been using the buffet cabinet we had inherited from Ed's parents as a coffee bar/extra storage and counter space. Ed moved the wall outlet up and changed the light switch to another outlet. He moved the light switch to the other wall. He also had to move 2 can lights that were above this area away from the wall so they wouldn't be right above the cabinets. That wouldn't be good.

Since we were doing this in stages and it was still quite cold outside we didn't want to remove all of the flooring and have to be on the cold concrete too long so Ed cut out an area of the floor where the new cabinet would be.

After assembling the cabinet boxes he put the brackets on the wall for the cabinets. Then he hung the cabinets on them. With our wavy walls it was a bit challenging but he managed to get them lined up and level.

The doors and drawers came next. There are a lot of little things that have to be done with drawers and doors but I won't bore you with the details.

Here's the coffee bar with a temporary counter top, no trim, no to kick and no back splash.

The next area was the built in china cabinet in the breakfast area.

He followed the same steps with this area. At this point we are still short doors from the messed up deliveries. We were also short drawer pulls and knobs but that was my fault.

Next up was removal of the island. We let the boys help with that.

We chose to leave the old flooring down while we fitted the island. This all took place over a few weekends so we were living with the kitchen partially done.

Here is the demo of the back wall of cabinets. I had already taken out the tile back splash. Boy that wasn't easy but it felt good to finally have it gone!

Then it was time to demo the floor. The boys and I took care of most of that.

Progress was definitely made here! All that was left to do was the sink cabinet. Yay! We had the butcher block uncut on the island temporarily and various pieces of wood or shelving as temporary counter tops elsewhere. Fun times.

I forgot to take pics of the sink cabinet being removed but here it is while in progress.

Ed had to get creative with installing our sink. It was not from IKEA and was almost the exact same size as the cabinet. I have to say that this sink is awesome. Really. It's probably my favorite thing about the kitchen.

Ed and Robert cut the butcher block down and used a biscuit joiner to join the 2 sides together.

I sanded it down and treated it with tongue oil. We don't plan to actually cut on the island so it isn't a problem using the tongue oil. If we were planning to cut on it I would have used something different. I am not exactly happy with the joint so I will probably sand it down and fix the joint and stain it a little darker. For now it is fine though.

We had already ordered the quartz for the counter tops and they had been out to measure. That was the easiest part of this entire project. They were delivered on time and they told us our installation was simple so they finished earlier than they thought they would.

During this time we also ripped the carpet out of the living room so we could extend the laminate flooring we had put in the front two rooms and entry into the back part of the house. At this point the only carpet we had left was on the stairs.

Here is our kitchen today!

I know that was a lot of pictures but I really love this kitchen!

Here is a little extra we added to the kitchen. It wasn't part of the original plan but when we ordered the cabinets and saw this we knew we had to have it. It's been great to have!

Well I hope you have enjoyed this post. We still have a few things to get done with the lighting and trim around the back door but we are much closer to being done now!

Please let me know if you have any questions. I will try to post all the colors and names of things when I have time.

Thanks for stopping by!
